The Power of Resting in God & Relaxation

The most powerful practice I know for changing the way you feel is to rearrange your schedule and your day to include periods of rest in God and relaxation. 

When done properly, this practice will change your mood immediately. When you enter into the light, you feel the joy of it. You feel the freedom of it and everything else falls away. 

Resting in God is different than resting your body in front of the television. Resting in God is different than resting in front of the television or just planting your body on the beach. Resting in God is active. It is a deliberate attempt to let go of all thinking, to move past your grievances (the dark clouds) and enter into the light that is within. it is to call on the power of the universe and join with the light you are.

It’s big on my mind right now. 

In Resting in God and Relaxation, you actively leave behind everything that generally occupies your mind. You leave behind all your grievances, your stories, your worries, your cares, your problems. You leave behind all seeking and needing and wanting. You come into a present moment and sink down into the stillness, to the light in you. 

This practice is described in great detail in A Course in Miracles in many different places, in many different ways. 

The general idea in all of them is that you turn your attention to God, to the Love you are, to the light within. It talks about this light being a brilliant light, with power to remove all problems, all grievances, all darkness. 

Grievances hide the light of the world in you. The light is there but you cannot see it while you are holding grievances. How do you know WHEN and IF you are holding grievances? Quite simply. You feel bad. 

With practice and mind-training you begin to be super alert to when your mind is thinking about people, places, problems and things. You suddenly “see” when you are angry, upset, guilty, blaming, complaining, criticizing. 

You have the ability to see when you are holding grievances and when you are telling your story

This is a miracle to see this. So often we live our whole lives reacting: feeling angry, sad, depressed, upset, confused, feeling unworthy, feeling powerless and weak -and then brief moments of joy! – until something else happens in our external environment and we are back in sadness, confusion, anger. The ego loves to hold onto grievances and tell other people and get them involved. This is the way you stay stuck in the dark clouds. 

At a certain point, you see what you have been doing. You catch yourself in the middle of a phone call, conversation or Skype call and you see your emotions running the show. 

At this point, you laugh actually! There is always an initial shock at first when you see how you have been having a whole conversation, completely unconscious to the Light and Love and Joy that was there all along, but then you immediately begin to laugh that you see it. 

At a certain point, these wild mood swings between emotions should begin to interest you! You begin to question: How is it possible I go from happiness to anger so quickly? How does that happen? At some point, you begin to question what you are doing. This is what happened to me. I one day “saw” that I didn’t have to hold onto grievances, upset, fear or worry. I saw that I had a choice: to find the light in me OR remain in the darkness thinking about my problems. 

“Let us end the ancient search today by finding the light in us, and holding it up for everyone who searches with us to look upon and rejoice.”

For me, it came about through the workbook lessons of A Course in Miracles through training my mind to “see” when I was sliding back into old energy fields of hatred, confusion, attack, defense and guilt. It actually becomes a fun game when to watch how quickly the mind slides into darkness and how quickly you can catch it and bring it back to the light you are. 

After a while, you don’t allow the mind to slide back into the darkness so much anymore. You realize what those thoughts of anger and judgment do to your peace of mind and YOU DON’T GO THERE. It’s a decision and after a while, the light is what is more interesting to you. That’s where all the power is. That’s where the fun begins. That’s where creation is. That’s where you are alive, centered, happy, in love. 

How do you get there and stay there consistently? 

Determination and Willingness to create space in your day to rest in God. It’s going to require you to rearrange your schedule a little (or a lot).

Give yourself periods of relaxation every day when you are forgetting everything in the world – letting go of what “he said” or “she said” – forgetting about your sicknesses, problems, and planning – and for brief moments through the day (5 minutes to 15 minutes) connecting with the light within. 

When you begin this practice of rest in God and relaxation, the ego mind goes nuts. 

Don’t believe me?? Give it a try! 

Sit quietly determined to let go of everything that generally occupies your consciousness and connect with the light within and rest there, and pay attention to when the first thought comes in about the world, the past, the future, your problems, your aches, pains and to-do list! In the beginning, it’s generally within 5 to 10 seconds! 

The mind is habitually conditioned to think about external events (and remember that your body is an external event, the body is outside of you). 

It’s not “bad” that the mind is so lazy in the beginning. It’s just how it is. 

But you are the trainer of the untrained dog. You are in charge now and not letting the mind run wild. You have the power to tame it. You have the power to bring yourself back to present moment, letting go of all the content of your mind. 

And herein lies the peace of God. 

After a while, you start to get good at this. After you have seen AND FELT the difference between thinking about your problems vs. remembering the light you are, the decision is easy. Then there is no going back.

Here it is in entirety, with the practice to let your grievances go and let the light you are shine through: 

Lesson 69

My grievances hide the light of the world in me.

No one can look upon what your grievances conceal. Because your grievances are hiding the light of the world in you, everyone stands in darkness, and you beside him. But as the veil of your grievances is lifted, you are released with him. Share your salvation now with him who stood beside you when you were in hell. He is your brother in the light of the world that saves you both.

Today let us make another real attempt to reach the light in you. Before we undertake this in our more extended practice period, let us devote several minutes to thinking about what we are trying to do. We are literally attempting to get in touch with the salvation of the world. We are trying to see past the veil of darkness that keeps it concealed. We are trying to let the veil be lifted, and to see the tears of God’s Son disappear in the sunlight.

Let us begin our longer practice period today with the full realization that this is so, and with real determination to reach what is dearer to us than all else. Salvation is our only need. There is no other purpose here, and no other function to fulfill. Learning salvation is our only goal. Let us end the ancient search today by finding the light in us, and holding it up for everyone who searches with us to look upon and rejoice.

Very quietly now, with your eyes closed, try to let go of all the content that generally occupies your consciousness. Think of your mind as a vast circle, surrounded by a layer of heavy, dark clouds. You can see only the clouds because you seem to be standing outside the circle and quite apart from it.

From where you stand, you can see no reason to believe there is a brilliant light hidden by the clouds. The clouds seem to be the only reality. They seem to be all there is to see. Therefore, you do not attempt to go through them and past them, which is the only way in which you would be really convinced of their lack of substance. We will make this attempt today.

After you have thought about the importance of what you are trying to do for yourself and the world, try to settle down in perfect stillness, remembering only how much you want to reach the light in you today,–now! Determine to go past the clouds. Reach out and touch them in your mind. Brush them aside with your hand; feel them resting on your cheeks and forehead and eyelids as you go through them. Go on; clouds cannot stop you.

If you are doing the exercises properly, you will begin to feel a sense of being lifted up and carried ahead. Your little effort and small determination call on the power of the universe to help you, and God Himself will raise you from darkness into light. You are in accord with His Will. You cannot fail because your will is His.

Have confidence in your Father today, and be certain that He has heard you and answered you. You may not recognize His answer yet, but you can indeed be sure that it is given you and you will yet receive it. Try, as you attempt to go through the clouds to the light, to hold this confidence in your mind. Try to remember that you are at last joining your will to God’s. Try to keep the thought clearly in mind that what you undertake with God must succeed. Then let the power of God work in you and through you, that His Will and yours be done.

In the shorter practice periods, which you will want to do as often as possible in view of the importance of today’s idea to you and your happiness, remind yourself that your grievances are hiding the light of the world from your awareness. Remind yourself also that you are not searching for it alone, and that you do know where to look for it. Say, then:

My grievances hide the light of the world in me. I cannot
see what I have hidden. Yet I want to let it be revealed to
me, for my salvation and the salvation of the world.

Also, be sure to tell yourself:

If I hold this grievance the light of the world will be hidden
from me,

if you are tempted to hold anything against anyone today.

    Excellent insight! I love your new site. Funny we are on the same wave length this week. I’m resting in God’s goodness and promises vs. what I believe are problems. I lost my keys for a week to my car and I asked God and there they were in my trunk under a shirt. I laughed what a lesson. We think we are lost but we are not our truth is hidden. I guess were keys were never lost there was not a problem but in my own mind. We are not lost from God and the Kingdom but in our own minds. Thank you Lisa for your light

  4. This resonates in me. The grievances are real hell, the only hell. I’m practicing daily A. C. I. M. & THE WORK of Byron Katie & Abraham-Hicks & Louise Hay. Writing my book, “From Hell to Paradise, THE WORK That Turns Me to Real Happiness” by Charlene Marie, a memoir as unique dialogue. In 2010, I experienced violent depression similar to what Byron Katie experienced. 🙂

    This is a great message for me at this time and I love the exercise of seeing it as dark clouds but being able to go clearly past them to the light.     Lisa, I know you have said in the past that you are not a big meditator but these practices of going within and finding the light sure feel like a form of meditation. This is all labeling but significant in relating to some of the wonderful material in Joe Dispenza’s book “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself”. As you know (since I found Joe’s work through you) Joe is big on the meditative process and I think that the Course ties in perfectly. The Course provides an additional important factor, the beautiful comfort of God’s love and the Holy spirit to take us through the work. Great stuff, thank you for all that you provide.
